One important advantage of EDM wire cutting is the possibility of cutting hardened tool steel, regardless of its hardening properties, with negligible effect on the treatment properties of the processed pieces.
The small thickness of the wire and precise machine control allows for intricate parts design, contoured details, leaving the designers more choices when it comes to flexibility.
The parts’ specifications can get quite strict regarding the precision and the required thickness of the parts since the wire EDM process does not involve a contact between the wire and the parts being processed. It is a great way of obtaining inner sharp corners, with high precision and burr free.
EDM wire machines are also a solution for thin or brittle materials that cannot be processed individually. Thin layers of material can be stacked and processed together for volume manufacturing.
